Drive to get Norfolk residents to test for HIV

A new drive to get people across Norfolk to test for HIV has been launched by the Terrence Higgins Trust.

People are now able to order a free testing kit from the Trust, in a bid to "break the chain" of infections across the county.

All they have to do is enter their postcode into a test finder and their kit will arrive in plain packaging through their letter box.

Neil Howard, Norfolk Service Manager at Terrence Higgins Trust, said:

"This is an incredible opportunity to break the chain on HIV infections in Norfolk and help move us further forward in achieving our goal of ending HIV transmissions.

"Across Norfolk we’re determined to make HIV testing as easy as possible and I’d encourage anyone to order a free test today, because this chance to beat HIV won’t wait and won’t come around again.

"It’s estimated that around 7,500 people in the UK are living with undiagnosed HIV, which prevents them accessing effective treatment to improve their health,  and means they may unwittingly pass it on.

"If everyone is able to use their time in lockdown to get tested and know their HIV status, we can ensure something really good comes out of the devastation of the Covid crisis."

In 2018, nearly half of people (49%) diagnosed wth HIV in Norfolk received their diagnosis at a late stage, which contrasts to 43% across England.

The launch of the campaign, follows a recent study from the Trust found that 84% of people are abstaining from sex outside of their immediate household, due to the coronavirus lockdown.

This means those who have not had sex since lockdown can get an accurate test, if they test now, as it can take up to three months to detect the virus.

Those who want to receive their free kit can do so by clicking here.
