Community First Responders - volunteers wanted
The East of England Ambulance Service operates a volunteer organisation called the Community First Responders. These people volunteer to respond to emergency situations in and around the area where they live. The group is always looking for new volunteers and experience isn't essential as an intensive weekend training course will be given. If you'd like more details their day time number is 01284 731802. Youth group helpers needed
Local youth groups in Briston and Melton Constable are looking for more helpers - especially the 1st Melton Constable Guides group who will have to close if a new leader isn’t found by July. Sheringham Park Ramblers
Sheringham Park Rambling Group meets at Sheringham Park on the first Sunday of every month, at 2pm at the Visitor Centre. You're invited to join a volunteer-led ramble through the park. Making Norfolk Safer
Making Norfolk Safer is a joint project with Age Concern North Norfolk; the Fire Service; Social Services, and the Police to offer advice on anything from fire safety to home security. It is aimed at improving safety for older people in the area and Age Concern can carry out a Home Fire Safety visit and also fit free smoke detectors if required. Families First - quiz
Many thanks to Sharon Holl in South Creake who has compiled a pop music quiz sheet to raise funds for North Norfolk Radio's Families First local charity. There are 100 clues. The first 50 answers are singers or groups and the second 50 are song titles. Sheets are £1 each and there is prize money of £10. For a copy of the quiz sheet phone Sharon on 01328 823364. North Norfolk Triathlon Club
The North Norfolk Triathlon club - which gives professional coaching in the three disciplines of Swimming, Cycling and Running - meets at the Alderman Peel Sports Specialist college in Market Lane in Wells. On Wednesdays it's for adults from 6.45pm to 8.45pm. Cost is £3 per session. On Thursdays it's for seven to 16 year olds from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Cost is £2 per session. (Membership is £15 per year which covers insurance and all on costs)

Charity bookshop - Castle Acre
There's a charity bookshop set up by the Friends of Castle Acre Church to raise funds for essential repairs and maintenance of St James the Great Church.

It's in the former butcher’s shop at the east end of the main village High Street and is open on most Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and on other holidays in the summer, subject to volunteers being available.

Indications of Spring

Indications of Spring’, the Robert Marsham tri-centenary exhibition, is at St Margarets Church in Stratton Strawless. The display consists of colourful panels describing the life and achievements of this important Norfolk naturalist, and is open to the public daily throughout the year.

He is best known for his ‘Indications of Spring’, a meticulous recording of the dates of spring events which was continued by his family.

The Stratton Strawless bluebell woods are now full of the spring flowers that he noted and are open to the public on the weekends of April 26/27; May 3/,4/5; May 10/11.

Hickling hosts a food fayre on the first Thursday in every month. It's held at the Methodist Chapel in Heath Road between 9am and Noon. There's also coffee/teas and refreshments.


Ashmanhaugh Light Railway

The Ashmanhaugh Light Railway is a 7¼ inch gauge railway, within earshot of the Bure Valley Railway and within sight of the Bittern Line trains.

Open Sundays days are scheduled for May 4th....June 1st....July 6th...August 3rd....September 7th...and October 5th. The opening times are from 2pm to 5pm.

You can find the railway just past Wroxham off the Stalham Road at Beeston St Lawrence (signposted Ashmanhaugh). There will be signs on open days.

Artist trail

Between May 17th and June 1st, artists across Norfolk are opening their studios to the public as part of The Norfolk and Norwich Festival. They include eight artists from Hindolveston, Briston and Hunworth who have created a special trail in conjunction with The Hunny Bell pub in Hunworth.
Most of the studios offer refreshments. For full details; maps and opening times log onto the website below. There will also be plenty of signs pointing the way to each studio.

The artists involved are:

Briston:

Trevor Woods - modern contemporary acrylic paintings, bold graphic style, local and London scenes.

Nicky Webb - kiln-formed glass, various unusual items such as dishes and vases.

Colin Bygrave - printmaker using the traditional method of etching to produce atmospheric landscape prints

Sandi Westwood - oil and pastel painter, whose images are inspired by the earthly and ethereal worlds.


Hindolveston:

Beth Morrison - illustrator and maker, using collected materials

Audrey Bould - influenced by the seasons, using mainly pastels to paint from life

Hunworth:

Kate Green - illustrator who also makes quirky and lyrical paintings that have a strong decorative quality.

Andy Midgley - landscape photographer, inspired by the serenity and light of the North Norfolk Coast.

Wolterton Park and Hall

On May 18th there's an organic garden event at Wolterton Park between 10.30am and 5pm. It includes a chance to see a working kitchen garden along with stands, stalls and demonstrations and also children's activities. Then between 2pm and 4.30pm there'll also be an exhibition in the Hall depicting three centuries of Mannington and Wolterton Halls.
Admission to the garden event is £2, and to include the Hall £5. Children are free.

There's a charity Antiques Valuation Day at Keys in Sheringham at 11, Station Road from 10am to 4pm. It's to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance which is the firm's nominated charity for this year.
Valuers from Keys Aylsham Salerooms, specialising in antique furniture, silverware, jewellery, clocks & watches, paintings, & collectables, will be able to give their advice at a charge of £1 per item. If it's not possible to take an the item into the office, an opinion can still be given from a photograph.



Charity Dinner

A Charity Dinner will be held on 22nd May at Labone Indian Restaurant in Cromer Road, Sheringham. 6pm and 8.30pm. It is in aid of Novaghi, Sylhet Province, a village in Bangladesh and Sheringham-based charity Excel 2000. The event will be attended by Councillor Sue Arnold, Chairman of North Norfolk District Council.

The money raised will help provide computers for students in the village of Novaghi.

Also benefiting from the evening is Excel 2000 a charity based in Sheringham providing exercise classes (land and water based) for people of all ages who need help in keeping fit. Your money is needed to help train new instructors and keep these much needed classes going.

The gardens at Heydon Hall and some gardens in the village of Heydon will be open from 2 to 5pm on Sunday 25 May. Entry to the Hall gardens will be £2.50 and to the village gardens £2.00. Entry for children under 14 and parking will be free. Dogs will be welcome on leads in the Hall Park. Teas will be available and there will be stalls selling plants and bric-a-brac. Heydon is signed off the B1149 Norwich to Holt road about 13 miles north of Norwich.


North Norfolk Country Fair - Weybourne

There's a North Norfolk Country Fair on Sunday May 25th at Weybourne (opposite the windmill.) It's from 10am to 5pm. It's organised by the the Weybourne Community Fund. There's arts and crafts; local food producers; trade stands; displays and attractions. There's also a car boot sale; refreshments & beer tent

Cromer lifeboat on show

Following the success of the open morning in January, the new Cromer lifeboat, R.N.L.B. Lester, will be on show to the general public again on May 25th from 1.30pm to 4.00pm. Cromer Ladies’ Lifeboat Guild will be running a cake stall and raffle, and will be providing refreshments at the pier lifeboat house.
Although there will be no access to board the boat, crew members will be available, and all are welcome to visit and view this new Tamar class lifeboat.

On Saturday 14th June there will be a reunion for all pupils who made up that first intake in 1960. It will take place at Reepham High School and run from 4.30 pm to 9.00 pm. There will be tours of the school and chances to meet former school pals. Light refreshments will be available.
